Onions (Allium cepa) are one of the most widely grown vegetables all over the world, also in Latvia. Onion diseases are the cause of significant yield losses worldwide, so it is important to find the most effective and environmentally friendly methods to limit the diseases. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the microbiological product Trihodermins on the prevalence of the most common onion diseases. The trial was conducted in three types of onion plantations in Latvia in 2021. Types of growing: the onion variety ‘Karmen’ – grown from seed; the onion variety ‘Corrado F1’ – onion sets; and potato (family) onions – on-farm seed, using four variants: untreated, treated with a Trihodermins dry preparation, treated with a Trihodermins liquid preparation and combination of the Trihodermins liquid preparation, and two times foliar spray with liquid preparation according to manufacturers’ specifications. Leaf blight/purple blotch caused by a fungi complex of the genus Alternaria/Stemphylium, and basal rot caused by the fungi of the genus Fusarium were observed among the onion diseases in the 2021 vegetation season. The growing season of the onions was relatively short due to the lack of moisture, which affected the premature death of the onions. It was not possible to assess the efficacy of the microbiological product used neither in the case of Fusarium spp. infection nor Alternaria/Stemphylium complex infection, as symptoms were observed only on individual plants. In order to more objectively assess the possible impact of the microbiological preparation Trihodermins on the development of onion diseases, the study needs to be continued in the 2022 vegetation season.
