Fungal species from compost of oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) and their lignin-degrading potential

Oil Palm (Elaeis guinensis) is one of the most important commercial crops in Malaysia. The waste generated from oil palm milling processes, especially empty fruit bunches (EFB), causes environmental pollution. To heed the global call for sustainable production of oil palm, extensive research is recently conducted to convert wastes into value-added end product. EFB consists of high lignin content (20-27%), which forms a barrier towards microbial enzymatic degradation. This results in the slow decomposition rate. Our study successfully isolated 24 fungal isolates from the EFB compost, with 70% of the isolates identified as Aspergillus sp.. Three isolates showed the most potential in degrading lignin. Isolates 1c3 and 7c10(Diaporthe sp.), and 5c9 (Emericella dentata) showed strong lignin-degrading activity with percentages of decolourization 69.5 %, 22.54% and 49.73 %, respectively.
