Sammenhengen mellom laksepris og aksjekursen til lakseselskaper på oslo børs | The relationship between salmon price and stock price of salmon companies on the oslo stock exchange

Hensikten med denne oppgave er å se på sammenhengen mellom laksepris og aksjekurs på lakseselskaper. Laks har blitt en viktig handelsvare for Norge gjennom de siste tiårene og Norge står for rundt 50 % av verdenstilbudet. Dette tilsvarer en verdi ca. 30 milliarder årlig. Oslo Børs har blitt en ledende børs internasjonalt for lakseselskaper, og mange velger å noteres her. I tillegg har Fish Pool etablert seg som en ledende aktør for salg av finansielle laksederivater. Vi undersøkte våre problemstillinger ved å gjennomføre ulike typer analyser, fra enkle grafiske fremstillinger til mer avanserte regresjonsmodeller. Hovedtyngden av våre analyser var regresjonsanalyser. Dataene i denne oppgaven er hentet fra Oslo Børs, NOS Clearing, Statistisk Sentralbyrå og Fish Pool sine hjemmesider som er offentlig tilgjengelig. Analyseperioden vi skal se på er fra uke 26-2007 til uke 52-2011. Analysene er gjennomført i Excel og PcGive. Resultatene viser at det er en positiv sammenheng mellom endringer i 2 måneders futureskontrakter(M2) på laks og aksjekurs på lakseeselskaper. Fish Pool Index (FPI) hadde ingen signifikant påvirkning på aksjene, med unntak av Lerøy og Marine Harvest. Vi finner at sensitiviteten mot laksepris varierer blant selskapene. Grieg og Marine Harvest var de aksjene som hadde høyest sensitivitet mot M2. Med hjelp av dummyvariabler kontrollerte vi for sjokk i M2 og fant at aksjekursene var relativt mindre sensitive for prisendringer når sjokk inntraff. Alle aksjene hadde i perioden høyere korrelasjon mot M2 enn mot prisen til FPI, NOS og SSB. Fire av aksjene hadde også høyere korrelasjon mot M6 enn mot de tre prisene. Selv om vi finner signifikante sammenhenger mellom endringer i aksjene og futuresprisen på laks, ser det ikke ut til at retningen på lakseprisen påvirker retningen til aksjekursen. Fortegnsanalysen viste at endringen til aksjekursene og lakseprisen bare hadde samme fortegn i litt over halvparten av ukene i perioden. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the relationship between the price of salmon and the stock price of salmon companies.Salmon has become an important commodity for Norway who produces approximately 50 per cent of the global supply. This export has an annual value of approximately 30 billion Norwegian kroner. The Oslo Stock Exchange has become a leading exchange for salmon companies, and many salmon companies choose to be listed on this exchange. In addition, Fish Pool has established itself as a leading player in the financial derivative market for salmon. The thesis will seek to answer the above mentioned issue by conducting various types of analyses, from simple graphics to more advanced regression models. The main analytical tool will be regression analysis. The data used are collected from Oslo Stock Exchange, NOS Clearing, Statistics Norway and Fish Pool’s website which is publicly available. The analysed period is from week 26-2007 until week 52-2011. The analyses were carried out by using Excel and PcGive. The results show that there is a positive relationship between changes in the 2-month futures contract (M2) on salmon and the stock price of salmon companies. Fish Pool Index (FPI) had no significant effect on the stocks, with the exception of Lerøy and Marine Harvest. We find that sensitivity to salmon prices vary among the companies. Grieg and Marine Harvest were the companies that had the highest sensitivity to M2. By using dummy variables we controlled for shocks in M2, we found that stock prices were relatively less sensitive to price changes when a shock occurred. All stocks had higher correlation with M2 than with FPI, NOS and SSB prices in the analysis period. Four of the stocks had also a higher correlation with M6 than with the three price indexes. Although we found significant correlation between changes in stock prices and futures price of salmon, it does not appear that the direction of salmon prices influence the direction of the stock prices. The analysis of the direction of change on stock prices and the price of salmon showed that they had the same direction in about half of the weeks.
