Kan deltagelse i en frivillig organisasjon ha betydning for panafrikanske kvinners helse? En studie av frivillig organisasjonsarbeids betydning for opplevelse av sammenheng (OAS) | Can participation in a voluntary organization affect the Pan-African women's health? A study of the impact og voluntary work in Sence of Coherence (SOC)

I Norge finnes det lite forskning på området «deltagelse i frivillig organisasjonsarbeid og helse». Forskning som angår innvandrerkvinner, frivillig organisasjonsdeltagelse og helse ser ut til å være svært lite belyst. Hensikten med denne studien er derfor å undersøke om deltagelse i frivillig organisasjonsarbeid kan ha en betydning for panafrikanske kvinners helse. For å utforske dette ble informantenes fortellinger tolket og knyttet opp mot Antonvskys salutogene teori om opplevelse av sammenheng (OAS). Det ble benyttet kvalitativ metode i form av tematisk livshistorieintervju. Dette er en åpen, ustrukturert intervjuform hvor informantene fikk fortelle om seg selv og om sin frivillige organisasjonsdeltagelse. Utvalget besto av fire panafrikanske kvinner som alle var medlem av samme organisasjon (PAWA). Kvale og Brinkmanns (2009) metode for meningskoding og meningfortetting ble benyttet under analysen av intervjuene. Resultatene viste at tre av kvinnene ønsket å formidle sitt budskap om integrasjon til afrikanske kvinner i Norge. En av informantene rettet derimot sitt hovedfokus mot spredning av kunnskap i sitt hjemland. Informantene fortalte at organisasjonsarbeidet ga dem kunnskap som de selv dro nytte av, men som de også videreformidlet til andre afrikanske kvinner. Vennskap og nettverk som de knyttet gjennom organisasjonsarbeidet, ble tillagt stort fokus. Deltagelse ga dem energi og et avbrudd i en travel hverdag. I tillegg viste det seg at glede og annerkjennelse ga mening og motivasjon til deres engasjement i organisasjonsarbeidet. Kunnskap, vennskap og nettverk, mening og motivasjon er alle faktorer som lar seg forklare ved hjelp av de tre komponentene i teorien om opplevelse av sammenheng (OAS): 1) forståelse, 2) håndterbarhet, og 3) meningsfullhet. Denne studien viste at arbeid i en frivillig organisasjon kan bidra til en sterkere opplevelse av sammenheng (OAS), og på den måten bidra til god helse. De panafrikanske kvinnene som deltok i denne studien vil derfor stå sterkere i situasjoner som de enten selv har valgt å stå i, eller ufrivillig kommet inn i. De vil dermed ikke være så utsatt for stressorer som kan ha negative innvirkninger på helsen. There has been limited research in the area of "participation in voluntary work and health" in Norway. Research concerning immigrant women, participation in voluntary organization and health, seems to have been even more restricted. The purpose of this study is to examine whether participation in voluntary organization could have an impact on Pan-African women's health. To explore this, the informants’ stories were interpreted and linked to Antonvskys salutogenic theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC). Qualitative method in the form of thematic lifestory interview was applied. This is an open, unstructured interview, in which the informants could present themselves and their participation in the voluntary organization. The sample consisted of four Pan-African women, all members of the same organization (PAWA). The Kvale and Brinkmann (2009) method of meaningful encoding and meaning condensation was used on the analysis of the interviews. The results revealed that three of the women wanted to convey their message of integration of African women in Norway. One informant had her main focus directed towards the dissemination of knowledge in her native country. The informants said that the organizational work gave knowledge, which they benefited from themselves, but which they also passed on to other African women. The friendships and networks they developed through organizational work were given great attention. The participation promoted energy and a break in a busy day. In addition, it appeared that joy and recognition gave meaning and motivation for their involvement in organizational work. Knowledge, friendship and network, meaning and motivation are all factors that can be explained using the three components of the theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC): 1) comprehensibility, 2) manageability, and 3) meaningfulness. This study showed in that sense, that work in a voluntary organization can strengthen the sense of coherence (SOC), and thus contribute to good health. The Pan-African women, who participated in this study, will therefore be stronger in situations that they either have chosen to stay in, or involuntarily entered in to. Because of this, they will not be as exposed to stressors that can have negative effects on health.
