This chapter focuses on traditional agroecosystems that exemplify indigenous culture revolving around native rice. Studies conducted in a number of site within the highlands depict the use of the transect method in estimating the spatial extent of different land uses, or in this particular study, different land utilization types. This chapter demonstrates the practical procedure and formula for measuring the area of individual rice terraces pond parcels. Also presented are various studies conducted in attempting to determine the productivity of traditional rice varieties in the traditional way of quantification (i.e., in terms of bundled rice panicles) and their equivalent amounts in the conventional units (i.e., the metric system of measurement). The results of various studies in the municipalities in the provinces of Ifugao and Benguet are used to demonstrate the application of such methods.
