Isolation, purification and structural elucidation of compounds from the pericarp of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostanna L.), kamandiis (Garcinia rubra Merr.) and bunog (Garcinia benthami Pierre)

Compounds were isolated from Garcinia species growing in the Philippines. The pericarps of Garcinia mangostana, Garcinia rubra and Garcinia benthami were extracted which dichloromethane and compounds from the extract were isolated and prified. Column chromatography and thin layer chromatography were used to purify the compounds. The structures of the compounds were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and Lc-MS. The xanthone alpha-mangostin was isolated from G. mangostana, Two xanthones namly 1,3,5-trihydroxy-7methoxy-2,8-bis(3-methlybut-2-enyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one and 1.3,7-thrihydroxy-2,4-bis(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one were isolated from G. rubra. In G. benthami, two known triterpenoids methyl-(24E)-3 alpha, 9, 23-trihydroxy-17,14-friedolanostan-14,24-dien-26-oate (garcihombronaneB) and 22Z,24E)-3 betha, 9 alpha-dihydroxy-17,14-friedolanostan-14,22,24-trien-26-oic acid (garcihombrane F) were isolated.
