Stringhalt is a term used to define rapid, sudden, strong and prolonged muscular contractions of one or both hind legs, often with a spasm that raises the hind leg almost to the abdomen. It is described in connection with damage to nerves of the hind legs, degenerative diseases of the hock, and more and more frequently with poisoning by some poisonous plants. Last year, in Serbia – in the Stara Planina area and in Osečina near Valjevo, the first cases of periodic hock flexion in donkeys were recorded. This phenomenon was observed in younger categories of donkeys aged 1–2 years, for the first time during early spring (March – April), with no other symptoms of the disease. A search of the grazing fields on Stara Planina, where 6 cases were registered, found the presence of false dandelion in large numbers. Two to three months after first noticing ofthese changes in gait, the number of donkeys hyperflecting hind limb/s gradually decreased, although stringhalt was visible during the fall until it totally disappeared during next spring.
