Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris) is one of the most important invasive slug species and is considered among the hundred worst alien species in Europe. Spanish slug was introduced in Latvia at the beginning of 21st century, when began the free import of seedlings from other countries. The rapid spread of slugs is still promoted by the trade in seedlings. Natural distribution corridors of this species are roadsides, slopes of ditches, banks of watercourses where slugs are not being restricted or disturbed. The human habitation nearness serves as centres for the reproduction and further spread of slugs. This publication contains information on the biology, ecology and distribution of the Spanish snail, as well as other invasive and potentially invasive slug species in Latvia. This publication also contains recommendations for methods and means of limiting the number and distribution of slugs. Edition prepared within the project 1-08/187/2020 “Data collecting on new localities of invasive Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris), species distribution pathways, population viability and effects on the local red slug (Arion rufus) population” financed by Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
