Fortalecimiento de plataformas nacionales y regional de investigación y transferencia como apoyo a pequeños y medianos productores de café de países que integran el PROMECAFE

Dentro del marco de referencia del “Programa Centroamericano deGestión Integral de la Roya del Café (PROCAGICA), financiadopor la Unión Europea y ejecutado por IICA-CATIE-CIRADCACen colaboración con los institutos de café de Centroaméricay República Dominicana, el CATIE ha facilitado el proceso defortalecimiento de las plataformas nacionales y regionales deinvestigación y transferencia de tecnología. Este trabajo sintetizalos avances y destaca el monitoreo de la roya y sus razas llevado acabo en el marco de la plataforma regional de seguimiento de laroya, la cual está integrada por siete países vinculados al programa,más la inclusión de México y Jamaica vía apoyo de PROMECAFE.El objetivo de la plataforma es mantener un vínculo de comunicacióny seguimiento constante de los procesos de investigación ycapacitación sobre el monitoreo de la roya y sus razas en los diferentespaíses de la región, así como sobre estrategias integrales demanejo de los cafetales. A partir de un primer taller regional, realizadoen IHCAFE – Honduras, y reuniones de trabajo a través deplataformas virtuales, se ha logrado el seguimiento a los acuerdosde un plan de trabajo con actividades regionales definidas con lospaíses, en coordinación con PROMECAFE, institutos nacionalesde café y la UFV. Se cuenta con una base de datos documentalsobre las diferentes actividades en marcha. La plataforma mantienela información de los países con sus respectivos boletines demonitoreo e investigación de la roya, variedades susceptibles resistentes/tolerantes, plantas indicadoras de razas y el avance de lasrazas en la región. La información que se genera fluye en tiemporeal, a través de la plataforma WhatsApp y por correo electrónico,donde se realizan consultas con expertos como apoyo a la toma dedecisiones. El presente artículo enumera los avances de las plataformas,en especial la de roya, y resultados logrados hasta fecha.Además, propone acciones a desarrollar en el futuro.

Within the framework of the “Central American Program for theComprehensive Management of Coffee Rust (PROCAGICA),financed by the European Union and executed by IICA-CATIECIRAD-CAC in collaboration with the coffee institutions, CATIEhas facilitated the process of strengthening of national andregional research and technology transfer platforms. This worksynthesizes the progress and highlights the monitoring of coffeerust and its races carried out by the regional platform for monitoringrust, which is made up of 7 countries linked to the program,plus the inclusion of Mexico and Jamaica via the support ofPROMECAFE. The objective of the platform is to maintain acommunication link and constant monitoring of the research andtraining processes on the monitoring of rust and its races in thedifferent countries of the region, as well as on comprehensivecoffee plantation management strategies. Based on a first regionalworkshop, held at IHCAFE-Honduras and working meetings through virtual platforms, it has been possible to follow up on theagreements of a work plan, with regional activities defined withthe countries, this in coordination with PROMECAFE, NationalCoffee Institutes and the UFV. There is a documentary databaseon the different activities underway. The platform maintains theinformation of the countries with their respective monitoring andresearch bulletins on rust, susceptible resistant/tolerant varieties,race indicator plants and the advancement of races in the region.The information that is generated flows in real time, throughthe WhatsApp platform and by email, where consultations withexperts are carried out to support decision-making. This summarylists the progress of the platforms, especially the rust one, andresults achieved to date. In addition, it proposes actions to bedeveloped in the future.
