Influence of spacing and nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer application on yield and agronomic traits of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) [study conducted at CMU, Philippines]

The number of days to flowering of cowpea was significantly increased by application of nitrogen singly and decreased by application of P singly and in combination with N at 30, 45 and 60 kgs/ha, regardless of spacing. Generally, plant height increased with increasing rate of fertilizer application. Phosphorus applied singly, shortened the time from planting to harvesting of green pods and hastened maturity. A phosphorus level of 75 kg/ha either applied singly or in combination with nitrogen significantly increased green pod yield at any spacing used. The yield per day of cowpea tended to increase with the application of high level of phosphorus applied in combination with 45 kg/ha of nitrogen. Interaction effect between spacing and fertilizer treatments as well as N and P was not significant
