Floral biology of selected cassava and sweet potato varieties [study conducted at PRCTC, Leyte, Philippines]

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Plant Breeding and Agricultural Botany, situated in barrio Caridad, Baybay, Leyte. This was designed to: a) determine the number of days from planting to flower emergence of selected cassava and sweet potato accession; b) ascertain stigmatic receptivity and pollen viability of selected accessions of both crops; c) and know the time and duration of floral opening and anther dehiscence of both crops. Twelve accessions of sweet potato and eight accessions of cassava were utilized in the study. Blooming habits and floral morphology were observed. In sweet potato, variety Decolores was the earliest to produce flowers while variety Kaitong initiate flowers last. In case of cassava, observations on the number of days to flower emergence showed that variety Kadabao emerged its flowers first and variety Valencia the last
