All thirteen weed control methods (which included harrowing, hoeing, two pre-emergence residual, and a post emergence non-residual herbicide) except harrowing alone controlled weeds effectively for 40 days after emergence (DAE). However, most methods did not give season-long weed control. Only five weed control treatments yielded significantly higher than the untreated check although all gave comparable yield to the hand weeded check. Yield from the plot treated with harrow followed by hoe weeding + hand weeding in the rows + butachlor was superior to that from harrowing alone and untreated check. This was also the most profitable method. Lower net returns were obtained from two hand weedings due to high cost of labor. The lowest net return was obtained from harrowing alone followed by the plot treated with interrow cultivation + handweeding in the rows + pendimethalin due to the high cost of the herbicide
