Integration of some arthropod predators and varietal resistance for the control of the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) [study conducted in the Philippines]

Methods for the identification of levels of resistance of the rice varieties used were the seedling bulk screening test, host preference, population growth and survival and development of brown leafhopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal). Among the methods used, the modified seedling bulk screening test and population growth studies provided the greatest differences in levels of resistance among varieties. In the host preference study, there were more BPH on susceptible varieties and less on resistant varieties, due to the absence of certain feeding stimuli or the presence of feeding deterrents. The results of the study on population growth and survival of the BPH indicated the possible presence of an antibiosis factor in the varieties, causing a low population and low survival of the BPH on resistant varieties as compared to susceptible varieties. Feeding efficiency of predators, Lycosa pseudoannulata, Callitiichia formosana, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and Microvelia atrolineata to the BPH were also evaluated
