Prospects for increasing food production from goats in the tropics

Goats are widely recognised currently as one of the more important components of the animal genetic resources of the developing countries in the tropics. Implicit in this enlightened interest is appreciation of their many production characteristics in association with actual and potentially important varied contribution (meat, milk, skins, fibre and miscellaneous functions). These aspects have been considerably stimulated by the demand for more goat meat being in excess of supply, national and international developments concerning the species. Particular emphasis is given to a discussion with supporting data for the major contributing reasons for the renewed interest, and include interalia: (i) Small farmer involvement and socio-economic impact of rearing goats. (ii) Recent advances in intrinsic biological attributes: small size, higher digestive efficiency, food (meat and milk) producing ability and reproductive rate. (iii) Potential economic value in systems of production
