The effect of phosphorus on zinc content in rice and the extractable soil zinc [studied on Roi Et and Ban Mi soil series, Thailand]

Greenhouse experimental results of the effects of phosphorus on zinc content it rice grown in two Thai soils having different characteristics and the extractable soil zinc are reported. Phosphorus application increased dry matter weight but none of the zinc applications affected yield of dry matter. Moderate phosphorus applied to an acid loamy sand soil of Roi Et series increased plant zinc when observed at 20 days after seeding. The highest rate of phosphorus appeared to reduce plant zinc content y a considerable amount. The results statistically showed P-Zn interaction in Roi Et soil. Phosphorus applications did not change the extractable zinc concentrations to significant values. In addition, added zinc increased plant zinc content and the extractable zinc in soil solution. The P-Zn interaction under this study was considered to be due to the nature of physiological imbalance within the plants and not in the soil system. P:Zn ratios in top of rice plants were low, ranging from 9-114. DTPA, MgC12 and 0.05 N HC1 which were highly correlated with each other in measuring extractable soil zinc DTPA and MgC12 gave better correlations than 0.05 N HC1 to plant zinc contents of rice rown in the Roi Et and Ban Mi soil series
