Field and hydroponic glasshouse experiments were conducted at the International Rice Research Institute during the 1981 wet and 1982 dry season to study the genetics of root characters in rice and their relationships to drought resistance. Parents F1, F2 and F3 populations of the crosses IR 20/MGL2, MGL2/IR 52 and IR 36/IR 442-2-58 were used in the study. Inheritance of all the root characters studied appeared to be quantitative. Narrow sense heritability estimates were high for dry root weight, root base thickness, and root length density, moderate for root volume and thick root number, and low for maximum root length and resistance to root pulling. Results indicate that root characters such as root thickness and length density can be selected efficiently on individual plant basis in the early segregating generations
