Regressions to estimate fresh weight and dry matter production of young Pinus caribaea var. Hondurensis under plantation conditions [Northern Territory of Australia]

Regressions relating tree fresh weights to basal area (BA) and "volume" (0.5 x BA x height) were fitted to data from a sample of more than 1000 trees of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis from three sites in the Northern Territory of Australia. For small trees (dbhob/6.4 cm) a linear relationship between fresh weight and "volume" gave a satisfactory regression fit (R2 values of 0.93 and 0.83 for stem and total fresh weight respectively); for larger trees the allometric relationship gave R2 values of at least 0.92. Site and form characters (foxtailing) were incorporated into the regression equations. Regressions relating dry weight to fresh weight were fitted to a subsample of 176 trees. The technique provides a sensitive means of comparing the effects of establishment, nutritional, provenance and cultural treatments on the early performance of P. caribaea var. hondurensis
