This study presents an overview of the library of documentation services of 23 agricultural universities, 36 farm research institutes and the All-India coordinated research projects, with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research as the apex body which funds and coordinates teaching, research and extension in agriculture in India. Bibliographic control at the national level is discussed, as well as the lack of a comprehensive document collection at a single center and the futile efforts to establish a national agricultrual library. Examines the position of union catalogs and other tools for locating different types of documents in agriculture and presents the data on the number of periodicals that are currently held by Indian libraries. Reviews the document delivery system that exists among the agricultural institutes and with related institutes in the country. The role of Indian National Scientific Documentation Center with its regional centers in supplying documents banking upon the resources of other libraries is examined. Describes the extent of document coverage in the fields of food and agriculture and document delivery service by the IDRC-funded Sorghum Millets Information Center of ICRISAT at Hyderabad and the National Information Center for Food Science and Technology at Mysore. The availability and use of modern methods of reprography and the potential for the use of telecommunication facilities for the delivery of primary documents are discussed. The need for a South Asian Agricultural Documentation and Information Center is emphasized
