The objetive of the presented research was to study the seed maturation in 17 cultivars of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). The experiment was conducted under field conditions at Botucatu county, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, on a soil classified as Ultisol (Terra Roxa Estructurada). The sowing was carried out in late December and the seed maturation was studied in seeds harvested weekly. The interval between 50% of flowering and the first harvest, was different between cultivars. The seed maturation was evaluated by the visual aspect and the hardness of the seeds from the botton and the top parts of the panicle, the moisture content, the 1 000 seeds weight and the germination after homogenesation of the moisture of the seeds in a dry chamber. By the analysis of these characteristics, the physiological maturity could be determined and it ocurred near 40th or 46th days after flowering (50%) for the most of the cultivars
