Irrigation scheduling of mustard using open pan evaporation in grey flood plain soil

A two year field experiment was conducted on silty clay loam soil at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute BARI which is located at Jamalpur to find a suitable irrigation water/cumulative pan evaporation ratio (IW/CPAN-E ratio) for determining an optimum irrigation schedule for a promising mustard mutant, BINA 5909, (Brassica juncea (Linn.) Czern. coss). The irrigation treatments included different IW/CPAN-E ratio. IW/CPAN-E ratio treatments were highly significant ( P=0.01). The moisture content upto 120 cm depth was monitored using both neutron probe and tensiometer at the sowing stage, before each irrigation and at the harvesting time. It is found from the field experiment that this mustard mutant needs three irrigations (total 8.0 cm) for Jamalpur area with a contribution of 3-4 cm water from rainfall. The first irrigation (amounting 4.0 cm) is needed after 25-60 days of sowing. The others two are required in two equal splits (each 2.0 cm) after 55-60 and 80-85 days of sowing, respectively.
