A baseline survey of spawn buyers at the Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station hatchery, Mymensingh (Bangladesh)

Questionnaires were taken on 54 individuals during the 1986 fry production programme at the Freshwater Aquaculture Research Station (FARS), Mymensingh Bangladesh on analysis, 45% claimed fish farming as their major occupation. The average number and total area of ponds owned was 6.6 and 0.9 ha, respectively. 73% produced only fingerlings and prefered rohu and silver carp. 98% supplied supplementary feed in the form of oil cake primarily. Comparing the average purchase of 356,000 spawn with the average harvest of 122,000 fingerlings, yields a survival rate of 32%.
