Effect of BHC and malathion on the developmental stages of the rice-moth Corcyra cephalonica Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Laboratory studies on the larvicidal and pupicidal effects of insecticides - BHC (a chlorinated hydrocarbon) and malathion (an organophosphorus compound) were made on the larval stages of C. cephalonica at different dose levels. The observation revealed that the lethality of pesticides were directly proportional to their concentration present in the diet. Diet containing 0.012 per cent (w/w) of BHC and 0.03 per cent (w/w) of malathion caused 100 per cent larval death indicating absolute toxicity to the pest. These findings justify that BHC is more toxic than malathion
