Eight years trials with vegetables and apples of bio-dynamic growing in comparison with conventional management

Eight years comparative growing of apples and vegetables following biodynamic or conventional rules at the Experimental Station Auweiler, D-5000 Cologne, are interpreted. The investigations were supported by the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture and Forestry and accompanied by the Research Unit for Biodynamic Farming (Darmstadt). After having given large quantities of compost biodynamic growing resulted in an improvement of some soil properties, e. g. increase of organic matter content, the pH value and improvement of earthworm-activity, as compared to conventional growing. Some vegetable crops showed an increased infection of VA mycorrhiza at the root-tips. In the mean vegetable yields were lower by 19 per cent with biodynamic growing, in particular with crops c1394laiming an adequate nutrition, as cabbage, celeriac, broad beans and spinach. The percentage of saleable products was by 5 per cent less than with conventional growing. With the exception of an increased content of nitrate, chloride and total acid in conventionally grown products, chemical analyses to evaluate the nutritive value didn't lead to certain tendencies nor differences. Sensoric tests by the Geisenheim Department of the Federal Institute for Food, Karlsruhe, failed in gaining uniform results for the different crops after diverse treatments, as fresh state, storage and preparation in the different years. As a consequence of excessive compost dressing in the first years, the apple trees showed too strong shoot growth. In the mean the fruit yield was reduced by 33 per cent, less with Cox Orange Pippin', more with the more vigourous varieties 'Belle Boskoop' and 'Berlep
