Effect of leaf-to-fruit ratio on the growth, winter defoliation, leaf carbohydrate content, flowering and fruiting of satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.)

Fruits of 19 year old satsuma mandarin tree (sugiyama unshiu) were thinned out at the leaf-to-fruit ratio (L-F ratio) of 10 to 40. As the L-F ratio increased, vegetative growth and fruit weight in the current year were increased, but winter defoliation was reduced. On the other hand, flowering and fruit set in the following year were increased with increasing L-F ratio from 10 to 40. There were no significant differences between the L-F ratio and fruit quality and N.P content of leaves, but carbohydrate content of leaves in next spring was slightl1043y increased as the L-F ratio. There were significant positive correlations between L-F ratio and current year's summer cycle shoot growth and next year's flower bear and yield, but winter defoliation was negative correl
