Profiles of net canopy photosynthesis at noon, determined by combining measurements of 12CO2 exchange and 14CO2 uptake, solar irradiance and leaf area index were measured on three occasions during the growth period of cassava in the field. Interrelationship between these parameters were evaluated in the context of the overall efficiency of the canopy for photosynthesis. Much of the difference in photosynthetic rate between canopies was in the upper and middle layers where most of CO2 fixation occurs. Profiles of photosynthesis suggested that for most of the season, the cassava canopy was inefficient in the sense that lower leaves were underutil1010ized or, alternately, an unnecessary amount of shoot was produced in the upper layers.
