Fruiting potentials of five cotton varieties [Philippines]

Highly significant differences in the total number of squares and flowers per plant, bolls retained, and plant height at 90 DAE were observed among the varieties. Deltapine 16 produced the highest number of squares (74.33) and flowers (63.00) and retained the highest number of bolls (25.00). Deltapine 90 consistently had the lowest number of squares (40.00) and flowers (31.00), and retained the lowest number of bolls (9.67). Lowest shedding percentage was observed in Deltapine 16 (66%) and consequently had the highest percent boll retention (34%). The fruiting potentials of the varieties in a decreasing order were as follows: Deltapine 16; UPL-C2; Linea 1; RD 1017-7; and Deltapine 90. Deltapine 16 and UPL-C2 apparently are good breeding stocks based on this study.
