Biomethanation studies of slop waste were conducted in Osaka [Japan] using sludge numbers 8 and 12 brought from the Philippines. The effects of different levels of slop waste and pH on the change in total sugar content and formation of volatile fatty acids were noted. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas mixture was the most preferred substrate by methanogen in sludge numbers 8 and 12. Biomethanation of pure compounds such as amino acids, sugar and fatty acids was also carried out to understand the process in slop waste. Acidogens isolated from sludge number 12 were of the coccus and rod types. They were Gram-negative and non-spore formers.
