Root and stalk root of maize - investigations into their control

A general survey on root and stalk rot of maize is supplied. The organisms present include mainly those of the genus Fusarium with Microdochium bolleyi and Trichoderma spp. having also a fairly high share, depending on the time of analysing the plants and the districts the samples come from. The effect of these organisms on yield is demonstrated with root and stalk rot, depending on the severity of the disease. A reduction of yield of about 10, 15 and 20 per cent has to be expected, when stalks are classified as medium (5), severe (7) and very severe (9) infecte1701d. Root rot caused losses of 5 per cent of kernel weight and 10 per cent of green masses, when the degree of infection increased from 4.9 in the control to 7.2. after artificial inoculation in the field. In spite of the fact, that breeding for resistance made good progress in the last 15 years, control measures should be applied, using field husbandry methods as fertilizing, ploughing, planting adequate plant populations using crop rotations and planting less susceptible cultivars. Figures are supplied in the susceptibility of hybrids to root and stalk rot. Whilst stalk rot was less severe (about 3.3) root rot was still present in many cultivars at a fairly high rate of 5.0 to 6.0 in a scale 1-9 at two test stations.
