Municipal wastewater applied to irrigate soils under forest was found to be safe when applied 4 times monthly over a 4-year period. Although initially the number of Escherichia coli bacteria in the wastewater was as high as 10 million per 1 ml it was reduced to 10 or less per 1 ml when the wastewater passed through the soil
