Effects of water quality on the susceptibility to Aeromonas hydrophila infection and its therapeutic measures in walking catfish

Fish were injected intrapertoneally with partially killed dose concentration of A. Hydrophila (2.14 x 10 eight cells) and then stress with various combinations of water quality of low dissolved oxygen, high unionized ammonia (NH3) concentration and low alkalinity to determine which parameters were most influential in predisposing the fish to bacterial infection. The results showed that mortality increased significantly under condition of low dissolved oxygen and high concentration of unionized ammonia. Histopathological changes were observed in the gills, liver, spleen, exocrine pancreas and abdominal mus1757cle of moribund fish. Walking catfish continuously exposed to 20 ppm. oxytetracycline-HCl, 20 ppm. tetracycline-HCl or 1 percent sodium chloride solution after intramuscular injection with 2.31 x 10 eleven cells of A. hydrophila had higher survival rate than the groups treated with calcium hydroxide 37.5 ppm., or potassium permanganate 4.0 ppm. fish injected intraperitoneally with 1.29 x 10 nine ppm. of A. hydrophila had high survival rate when treated with continuous exposure to 20 ppm. oxytetracycline-HCl, 20 ppm. tetracycline-HCl or 1 percent sodium chloride solution. Walking catfish were injected intraperitoneally with 1.15 x 10 eleven cells of A. hydrophila 15 minutes to 6 hours followed by injection of oxytetracycline-HCl or tetracycline-HCl at a dose of 30 mg/kg fish body weight showed 100 percent surv
