Separation of tannin from liquid waste of tea processing plant
1985
Srichun Kongmun
Waste water in a tea processing plant came mostly from rolling of tea leaves. Such waste water samples were found to contain 7.29 percent total solids and 0.72 percent ash, all in weight by volume basis (g/ml). Colorimetric method revealed that tannin content was found to be equivalent to tannic acid of 0.92 percent w/v. From experimental results it could be estimated that there would be 17 litres of waste water per 100 kilograms of fresh tea leaves fed into the process. Separation of tannin by precipitation with co1516pper acetate yielding the precipitation of copper-tannin complexes made it possible to separate 93.5 percent of tannin in the waste. This tannin separation was not only a mean to reduce water pollution but also a practical source of tannin for leather industry and medical applicat
