Distribution of clay minerals in the gypsiferous soils of Jezera region, Iraq

An investigation was made on the distribution of clay minerals in clay fraction less than 0.002mm, of gypsiferous soils. The clay was separated by sedimentation, the mineral species of clay fraction were identified by X-ray diffraction "XRD". A qualitative study for distribution of the minerals in the different depths was obtained by diffractogram. It is shown that Illite, Palgorskite and Kaolinite are the dominant clay minerals, other minerals present include Chlorite, Vermiculite, Montmorrilonite, Calite, Feldspare and Quartz. An interesting peak of 7.8 appeared in most of the soils, which nobody has reported in this area, and thought to be Meta-halloysite or intrastratified clay mineral
