In all stages of the female Varroa-mite one pair of salivary glands can be found. Each gland consists of two regions, differing in the cellular structure as well as in the quality of secretory products. Histochemical tests have shown, that the glands contain lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. By autoradiographic methods it was possible to prove, that the secretory products are released from the salivary glands into the host's tissue. The saliva probably is carried out by the hollow styli. After injections and implantations of saliva-tissue into the bees thorax disintegration of muscle could be observed, indicating a histolytical effect of the mites saliva
