An experiment was conducted to isolate eugenol from clove leaf oil by adding sodium hydroxide solution. Treatments included different concentrations of NaOH (2; 3 and 4 %) and different temperatures (30; 40 and 60 deg C) at which the NaOH solution was added. The eugenol was isolated by adding 6 parts of NaOH solution to 1 part clove leaf oil, and the solution was stirred for 30 minutes. Results indicated that adding a 4 percent solution of NaOH at 45 deg C was the best treatment for eugenol isolation, which produced 74.47 percent eugenol with a purity of 98.41 percent, refractive index of 1.5423, specific gravity of 1.0735, and solubility in 70 percent alcohol of 1 : 0.7
