Analysis of 485 samples of Norwegian cultivated soils shows that the total selenium content varies from 0.043 to 2.734 ppm. The average is 0.030 ppm. The southern part of Norway has been grouped into three major areas: A-I, the southwest coast area, comparatively high selenium level, with 70% of samples containing selenium more than 0.40 ppm; A-II-a, the southeast and central south area, low selenium level, with 86% of the samples containingselenium between 0.20 and 0.40 ppm; and A-II-b, the central east area, very low selenium level, with 94% of the samples containing selenium less than 0.20 ppm. The high selenium levels in A-I were found to be associated with the amount and composition of precipitation (atmospheric input) and a high content of organic matter.
