Ten gall mite species habe been identified on Cocos nucifera throughout the world. Their distribution on the host and their geographical distribution are presented in a table. Eriophyes guerreronis, Notostrix jamaicae, first reported for Costa Rica, and Retracrus elaeis are endemic gall mite species. The most characteristic morphological features by which the three species can be identified are also shown in a table. E. guerreronis is the economically most important species, it causes serious fruit damage. R. johnstoni, damaging the frond, could be collected from Chamaedorea elegans, an ornamental palm-tree exported to Europe. Wind plays the most important part in the dispersal of gall mites over a large area. Within the plantation transmission from infested coconut bunches to new uninfested bunches is by phoresis and rain
