Fundamental comments on problems of the use of fungi for plant protection

The fungal species Beauverai bassiana, B. brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae and Verticillium lecanii being pathogenic for insects have not been found to be pathogenic for man so far. It is obvious, that an evaluation of a possible use of fungi pathogenic for insects as a pest control product in the sense of biological plant protection which should be promoted should consider efficacy of the product as well as criteria for the safety of man and animals. For this reason, pest control products of this type should be developed by close cooperation between entomologists, botanical and medical mycologists. Only products developed in this way will reduce the problems posed by the requirements from the angles of medicine such as infectivity, toxicity, allergenic potential, and ecology. Research on these lines must not be seen as merely specific to this purpose. Rather it should be part of microecological research which has been successfully conducted on fungal species of current medical interest and should be intensified
