Airtight storage of cereals is a technology which can be managed on the farm level without applying any preservatives. In Schleswig-Holstein the importance of the procedure increased within the last years. After feeding these cereals difficulties occasionally have been reported. The present investigation describes the microbiological status of barley. Based on a survey after 9 months storage field fungi (Alternaria and Fusarium spp.) still occurred on 9.1 per cent of the samples. The isolated storage fungi were Hyphopichia burtonii, a yeast typical for this procedure, and the unspecific but widely distributed hyphomycetes of the Aspergillus glaucus-group, A. candidus and Penicillium roqueforti.
