In the agricultural ecosystems wide headlands with a large amount of flowering plants may guarantee the nutrition of beneficial insects. They can serve as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species and can act as bridges between isolated biotopes. Natural and hand-sown headlands showed a broader spectrum of carabids compared with neighbouring fields. They also served as refuge areas after harvesting. A wide headland could contribute to the reduction of aphids in an adjacent wheat-field. Field margins not treated with herbicides effected the beneficial fauna positively
