Variation in the morphology of the spike within Ethiopian barley, Hordeum vulgare L. (Poaceae)

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) samples were collected from different regions in Ethiopia and grown in a lath house. Spikes were identified and 290 of them representing 64 morphotypes ("varieties") selected on the basis of morphology and provenance. These were categorized for spike row number, caryopsis type, rachilla hair type, spike length, awn type, spike density and kernel colour; and classified (TWINSPAN) giving 42 groups. Six-row covered and naked, two-row nutans covered and naked, and deficiens covered types were found. Some morphotypes are found in higher proportions than others in some regions and localities. From one to twelve morphotypes occur per field; the overall average being three morphotypes per field.
