Studies on the biology and behaviour of the orb-weaving spider, Araniella opistographa (Kulcz.) and the crab spider Philodromus cespitum (Walck.), common spiders in apple orchards

The influence of 15 degrees C and 24 degrees C on the development, longevity and fecundity of the spiders was investigated. The developmental time from oviposition to hatch was 20 days at 15 degrees C and 10 days at 24 degrees C for both species. The developmental time of nymph-stages, however, differed significantly between the species. Developmental time of A. opistographa was 200 days regardless of temperature and 430 days for P. cespitum. Development and longevity of females was longer than that of males for both species at all temperatures. Experiments showed a reduction of longevity, when the sexual partners were together in one cage, when compared to individuals kept seperated. The number of eggs (250) laid by mated females was not significantly different at both temperatures or between species. During the period of oviposition mated females built between 5 and 7 eggcocoons. Larval hatch decreased after the formation of the third cocoon. Unmated females of both species exhibited reduced oviposition and unmated females of P. cespitum also a reduced number of cocoons
