Attractiveness of volatile chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seed components to Heliothis armigera larvae (Lep., Noctuidae)

Немецкий. A trident olfactometer is described which allows to quantify orientation behaviour of first instar Heliothis armigera larvae under choice conditions. Headspace material collected from floured Cicer arietinum seed evoked a positive orientation under these test conditions. From 25 gram chickpea seed flour, a total of 2.4 mug volatiles was collected. Analysis of the chickpea aroma by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed two dominant chemical classes, i.e. terpenoids with 35 per cent and alcohols with 18 per cent of the total. From the identified compounds, 16 were tested in the olfactometer assay. Significant positive orientation was evoked by pentan-1-ol and by a mixture of the three terpenes delta-3-carene, myrcene and alpha-pinene. Highest attraction was obtained by a synthetic kairomone, composed of the four compounds in the same proportion as th chickea aroma, i.e., 2 parts of pentan-1-ol: 5 parts of delta-3-carene: 1 part of myrcene: 9 parts of alpha-pinene
