Effect of different nitrogen forms and foliar application of zinc on yield, chemical compositions and some fibre properties of cotton plant [Egypt]

The trials reported were carried out at the Agricultural Experimental Station of El-Minia Governorate. Cotton plants (Gossypium barbadense L.) cv. Dandara were grown during two successive seasons. The influence of different nitrogen forms (ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and urea) at the rate of 60 kg N/fed. and four levels of zinc (0, 15, 30 and 45 ppm in the form of zinc sulphate) on yield, chemical composition and fibre properties of cotton were studied. The results showed that, urea or ammonium sulphate had more effect than ammonium nitrate on plant height, number of open bolls, seed index, micronaire value and the nitrogen and potassium percentages in leaves. The highest number and percentages of open bolls and seed cotton yield were obtained by ammonium sulphate application while urea or ammonium nitrate showed approximately the same effect on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium percentages.
