Grid baiting of spruce stands with frontalin for pre-harvest containment of the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae)

Paired 9 ha plots were established in spruce stands near Prince George, British Columbia in 1984. Plots baited with frontalin and alpha-pinene at 50 m grid intervals had significantly higher numbers of attacked spruce trees than unbaited plots. Attack densities were slightly lower on baited compared to unbaited trees, but overall more than four times the number of attacks occurred on trees in the baited plots. The pattern of attacked trees in the plots suggests that the effective range of the attractant semiochemicals, as released in this study, may be near 25 m
