On the role of Diplodina acerina (Pass.) Sutton and other leaf fungi as antagonists of the window gall fly Dasineura vitrina Kffr. in maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.)

During a high incidence of the window gall fly on maple leaves in 1988 and 1989, most of the larvae in the galls were found to have been killed by leaf fungi. One of the most conspicious gallinfecting fungi, Diplodina acerina, was also identified as the most frequent endophyte. Hitherto seen as a parasitic leaf fungus, D. acerina can now be evaluated as an endogenous antagonist against leaf-feeding insects. Further exemplified by these results, the positive role of endophytes for their host plants is commented on. Possible correlations between changes in the spectrum of symbiontic endophytes and recent forest decline are discussed, and the need for more research in this field is mentioned
