Complexity of the sex pheromone of male Ceratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera, Trypetidae)

Calling males of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Wied.) emit from their expanded anal ampulla a volatile secretion which functions as a sex pheromone for female conspecifics. Dosages ranging from 10(-3) to 10 equivalents of the above secretion induces receptor potentials of 1.9-6.0 mV in sensilla trichodea of the antennal funiculus of females, whereas identical levels of this pheromone evoked about 40-61 per cent lower receptor potentials in the respective sensilla of male C. capitata (fig.1). Since levels of 1 and 10 equivalents of the male pheromone elicited respective receptor potentials of 3.1 and 3.8 mV in male sensilla, this scent is also likely to promote olfactory recognition among male C. capitata. When compared with the male pheromone, the volatiles of female C. capitata induced significantly lower receptor potentials in the olfactory sensilla of females (about 47-55 per cent) and males (about 40-60 per cent)
