High oil content maize, a high energy feed for cattle and poultry

Conventional grain corn hybrids contain 3.5-5% oil in the grains. Oil content has been increased to above 19% by selection. However, field performance of such high oil content material was very poor. Considerable progress has been accomplished recently in improving field performance of high oil content material, that has gone through cycles of crosses and selection. Improved standability has been achieved by crosses between improved high oil content inbreds and elite inbred lines. We have recently released the hybrid "Natan" which contains 6.5% oil in the grains. Grain yield of "Natan" and total dry matter for silage is comparable to regular grain hybrids grown under intensive cultural conditions. "Natan" has regular leaves stature and medium resistance to lodging. Maturity group is 650 FAO. It is recommended to evaluate its advantage in feeding trials.
