A study on the effects of soil nutrient status on the growth of cocoa plant was conducted in the green house of Jember Research Institute for Estate Crops. Bouma-Janssen (double pot) method was used, and the treatments were i.e. complete nutrients, -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -micronutrients, and aqua dest, the last treatment was used as a blank. The nitrogen content of soil used was 0.27 percent and exchangeable magnesium was 1.0 me/100 g, whereas the other nutrients were moderately high. DR 2 clone of cocoa cutting was used. There were nutrient deficiency symptoms on all treatments, except on complete nutrient treatment. The growth of plant was inhibited on the -N treatment, whereas on -Mg treatment the dry weight of roots, stems and leaves were still high, however its growth curve has reached negative acceleration phase. -P treatment caused the stem dry weight low. K, Ca and micronutrient contents of soil tested were still sufficient for cocoa growing, on the other hand N content was insufficient.
