[Relation between population rate of pathogenic Aspergillus sp. in fresh and used chicken and bird feeds and number of cases of aspergillosis in poultry]

A total of 97 feed samples, including fresh and used chicken and bird feeds, feed ingredients and environmental materials were cultured mycologically by dilution plating on appropriate media. The colonies grown on the dilution which gave a convenient colony count were counted and the isolates were then identified. It was concluded that these samples were acting as the main source of aspergillosis infection in the birds. The population of pathogenic aspergilli, i.e., Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus and A. niger, increased, while most of the non-pathogenic ones and other fungi decreased, when they were incubated at 37 deg C. A. flavus was predominant in most of the samples. A. fumigatus and A. flavus were higher in used feed, litter, milled rice and milled maize compared with fresh feed. A. flavus exceeded the minimum number of colonies per gram sample, in milled rice bran, milled maize and used feed in chickens. On the other hand, A. fumigatus in fresh bird feed and A. flavus in unmilled rice were in sufficient numbers to cause infections as indicated by the occurrence of aspergillosis cases of both aspergilli in birds.
