[Cow and chicken manure as phosphorus sources in alfalfa cultivation]

This study was done during the months of January 1982 through May 1983 at the La Laguna Agricultural Experimental Station greenhouse in Torreon, Coah. Its aim was to evaluate the availability of phosphorous in cow and chicken manure in comparison with triple calcium superphosphate. The three sources were evaluated at four different dosages of phosphorous, ranging from 120 to 1,340 mg/planter pot. A control with no phosphorous was used. The production of dry alfalfa matter was also evaluated during 15 cuttings and the total amount of phosphorous in the plant and soil was determined. The total for this element was calculated at the end of the experiment. The treatments were applied in a calcareous loam soil, and 7.5 kg. of soil were used in each planter pot. From the point of view of yield, the three sources showed the same efficiency in supplementing soil phosphorous, both in the short and medium terms. As far as phosphorous recovery by the plants is concerned, at cow manure doses greater than 2 percent the availability tended to be greater for this source than for chicken manure or triple superphosphate, at the same applied concentration of phosphorous. For the soil conditions under study, a ton of cow manure in a dry base was equivalent to an average of 24 kg of triple calcium superphosphate and a ton of chicken manure to 100 kg of this fertilizer.
